I am extremely excited to be hosting the inestimably great Benjamin Weissman and the fantastically talented Sarah Shun-lien Bynum for this, the last reading of rockypoint’s first year! This Friday the 25th of June, at our favorite venue, China Art Objects in Chinatown.
There will be extra special treats for munching and nice wine to sip in celebration, all beginning at 7, with the readings starting at 8:15…please do come!
We will begin once again in the Fall with Aimee Bender and a very special soon-to-be-announced second reader.
Pre-rockypoint, cross-genre, loosely collaborative projects
Late 90s Inflatable Magazine, with Mark von Schlegell : a small run zine for which we were able to get incredible work including a cover by Dan Graham; Lawrence Weiner did his first interactive web piece for us; with stories by Lynne Tillman, Trinie Dalton, and many others, the first excerpt of Chris Kraus’ Aliens and Anorexia also appeared in its pages, and it is through this that I began my long and important friendship with Chris Kraus, who now also edits my fiction for semiotext(e).
2003 juncture: 25 very good stories and 12 excellent drawings, with Lara Stapleton. A book published by Richard Nash & soft skull press; I took 12 of the stories edited by Lara and asked artists whose work I loved to make a piece based on one of them. Including work by Michel Majerus, Philippe Parrena, Albert Oehlen, Frances Stark, Pae White, TJ Wilcox, and with a cover by Jorge Pardo.
rockypoint Press begins
2004 The first fully collaborative project is a book by Liam Gillick and Heather McGowan, Le Montrachet, produced by Brian Butler, and silkscreened by Christian Zickler. I asked all the participants to come spend a few days together on Long Island after which Liam and Heather spent a year talking about, and making, this book; it was then up to Christian to turn it into the gorgeous thing it now is. This was the beginning of my and Christian’s collaboration for rockypoint.
2008 The books proved too difficult to produce so I decide to make prints, still by bringing artists and writers together to create a fully original work, with Christian printing most of the work. Over the years, we have brought together five pairings, on view March 2013 at Sommer & Kohl in Berlin. This is an ongoing project, with many more pairings in the works.
2009 Reading series begins in Los Angeles, with participants such as Eileen Myles, Chris Kraus, Fanny Howe, Benjamin Weissman, Vanessa Place, Maggie Nelson, and many many others. Films and posters for the series by George Porcari, with the inaugural poster by Jorge Pardo (for which the text is taken from an e-mail I sent him about the poster itself…)
2012/13 I begin production on the first rockypoint film, again, all the principal participants are artists and writers. Like a Shadow is just recently completed with performances by Sylvére Lotringer, Tala Madani, Ben Ehrenreich, Marwa Abdul-Rahman and Penelope Pardo.
